His research focuses on the causes of war, victory and defeat in war, and the spread of civil wars to neighboring countries. His most recent publication used statistical analysis of trends in all civil wars since 1945 to predict the chances of regional war in the Middle East after American withdrawal from Iraq.

He received the University of Richmond's Academic Advisor of the Year award in 2011 and will be featured in the Princeton Review's book "The 300 Best Professors" in 2012. He lives in Richmond's West End with his wife, Debbie, and their two-year-old son, Grant.
